Sunderland yesterday

A real 'low' yesterday after looking comfortable against a poor WBA side for 92 minutes then conceding a last minute goal which cost us 2 precious points and all the positives that would have brought with it. This result ranks alongside the Crystal Palace play off game for disappointment and negative impact. After 5 straight defeats supporters can't take much more of this and the writing is on the wall for the rest of the season.

What's going wrong? Well one thing that's obvious is that we haven't got a settled side. If you look at yesterdays starting line, up only 4 of the players were in our Championship winning side - Breen, Arca, Whitehead and Elliott. The players MMc signed in the summer to 'strengthen' the side are just not good enough or have yet to settle (exception being Stubbs who is tremendous). The 'late signings' (Bassilla and Hoyte) look very promising but the 'main signings' (Stead, Gray, Miller and Davis) have all looked dreadful so far and ALL OF THEM ARE CURRENTLY PLAYING WORSE THAN THE PLAYERS WE HAD IN THE SAME POSITIONS LAST SEASON. I don't have a magic answer and neither, I suspect, does Mick McCarthy but yesterday Miller and Gray were truly awful and he needs to do something about it i.e. drop them until they can regain some form!

The only consolation from yesterday is that WBA are poor and will definitely be in the relegation shake-up with us at the end of the season but with West Ham and Wigan going OK we've a lot of catching up to do. Arca is in the paper saying that we need 12/13 wins, on the showing so far we'll be lucky to get any - welcome to the reality of the Premiership!

Billy, Jim, we've all been here before, and it doesn't get any easier the older you get. From may own point of view, and you two know it, the writing was on the wall in October 2003.

My own and only way of coping with it is to step back, and not put myself through it week after week. In mental health parlance SAFC are my stress vulnerability. Staying away is the difference between feeling totally gutted and seeing it for what it is. A GAME OF FOOTBALL.

Do you think for one minute the players will be worrying about and making themselves ill to the extent that you two are? Will MM have lost sleep knowing that he's financially secure?

No?

You know the solutions.

Do you mean that me and Billy should take over from MM so we donlt have sleepless nights and don't worry?

Exactly the opposite Jimmy. I think you and Billy should take over so MM has no sleepless nights and doesn't have to worry.
