Live8 London. After the ball...

Right bloggers, it's over. Over ran by 2 and a half hours, so who, at the end of the night and in the cold light of day, did it for you? Who rang your bells? Made them little hairs prickle ? Lets see the reviews.

Here are mine.

Pink Floyd:- Quite simply, BRILLIANT. Who would believe that they haven't played together for 24 years. If there is a reunion on the cards I WANT A TICKET!!!! That was the single most memorable event, musically, of the day.

Annie Lennox:- The tightest, most polished musical performance of the day. Note perfect and passionate.

The Stereophonics:- Raw power and just what the crowd needed to get them going at that stage of the day. A very good showing.

Robbie Williams:- I'm no fan, I think he is a knobhead of the highest order, but what showman and he sure knows how to play a crowd. Freddie Mercury for the 21st Century.

The Killers:- Only one song but delivered expertly. A little less mascara for Brandon Flowers yesterday.

Razorlight :- Have had great reviews but I must have been doing summat else at the time cos they just passed me by.

Snow Patrol:- The perfect setting for that classic stadium athem Run, which didn't get what it deserved because the singer was so wrecked with nerves that he bottled it. Still a great band though.

The Who:- Pure nostalgia and nowt else. There is a world of difference between an original line up ( witness Pink Floyd) and a one that lost half it's line up to drugs and booze and the crematorium. Townsend and daltrey still have it, but it leaves me cold.

Madonna:- Polished professional performance. Tried to steal the show but will never be anything other than a foul mouthed slapper as far as I'm concerned. Will be remembered for uttering the first 'F' word of the day than for her music.

Elton John:- Past it, washed up and to collaborate with that cocaine and booze soaked tit Peter Docherty just summed him up for me.

Coldplay:- Like them a lot, but left me cold . Ashcroft was good though

U2:- my favourite band, but being first up didn't do them justice. Playing big global events in the middle of concert tours can never hit the spot.

Mariah Carey:-

Paul McCartney:- Like a Rembrandt he's an old master. Great songs, Great delivery, but the Beatles can never be recreated so stick to your own stuff. It might be what the public want but not me.

Velvet Revolver:- Different.

REM:- A great showing, Stipe was a tad different with his blue stripe, but thje songs were tight, well delivered and got the crowd up.

I'm sure to have missed someone out, more because the were ordinary or just not famous enough as yet.

Biggest embarrasment of the day: DAVID BECKHAM. Couldn't string two words together when introducing Robbie Williams

So there you have it. Lets have a few comments of your own or even a review of the singer in Coxhoe Club last night.

TBH Jack the whole thing passed me by as I was busy all day with other things. By the time I sat down to watch it it was after 10 pm and almost over. Unfortunately the bit I saw seemed like the performers were full of their own ego's. I'm in at work today and a number of people have commented that Pink Floyd were great.
Wonder what happens next? Just watch, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some disruption at Gleneagles next week .

Double time or what Brian?

Yes Floyd were great. Bit better than watching Mynd at Doggie Club on a Thursday night.

There were one or two ego's up there, Madonna and mariah carey spring straight to mind along with that total knob, Peter Docherty.

Double time - if only! As a project manager I don't get paid for overtime but I guess the attractive salary and annual bonuses (8.5% profit share in 2004)make up for it but not so good on a sunny Sunday.

Mynd - there a name from the past. Hope they never reform. Some good bands and good nights at Doggy club - I remember seeing Paper Lace there once when they were a top group. Apparently they'd been booked months before and then became famous so had to honour the booking. I think they only played for 3/4 hour.

How about this for a memory of Doggy Club. All the lads were sat there and Alf Kalandra and Hodgy (not our Sunderland Hodgy, the other David Hodgson from Doggy) said to each other they were going to get up on the dancefloor at the next record, whatever it was. Dared each other to get up, bet each other £100 etc. Picture the scene. Dancefloor packed, DJ fades out the current record. Slight pause whilst the dancers await the next song to come on. Bit of a jingle being played across the link. Hodgy and Alf make their way down to the dancfloor. Just as they get there the next record comes on. 'Funky Gibbon' by The Goodies (remember that one!).

We're the Goodies,
How do you do?
We've just been down to the zoo.
Saw a monkey in a cage doin' a dance that could be the rage.
It's not hard, so let's all do
the Funky Gibbon!
Ooo! Ooo! Ooo!

Chorus

Do do do the Funky Gibbon (Funky Gibbon?)
We are here to show you how. (ooo ooo ooo) -- gibbon hoots
Ooo Ooo Ooo the Funky Gibbon (Funky gibbon?)
He's just like you,
So, come on, Do
The Funky Gibbon Nowwwww.

Dogs are always howlin',
Cats are always Yowlin',
But Gibbons only like to Sing and Dance. (Boop oop shee boop)
You be like that monkey,
Get a little funky,
And in a while, start to smile,
Gibbon have a chance.

(Chorus)

Now get ready to do the Funky Gibbon!
Drop one arm down by your knees, let the other arm reach up to the trees.
Now let your wrists go limp like a bent baboon
And get ready to sing this Gibbon's tune (ooo ooo ooo, Funky Gibbon)
Now won'tcha gimme an Oooooo (oooooo)
Come on gimme an Oooooo (oooooo)
Give me an Ooooooo (oooooo)
Now put 'em together and what have you got?
ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo <--- gibbon hoots

(Chorus)

ooo ooo ooo Funky Gibbon
ooo ooo ooo Funky Gibbon
ooo ooo ooo Funky Gibbon
He promised to buy me a bunch of blue Gibbons to tie up my bonnie brown...

Whole dancefloor scatters, Alf and Hodgy pause for a moment then, WTF, go onto the dancefloor and start 'dancing' to the Funky Gibbon. This involved jumping round like chimpanzees and generally making c***s of themselves whilst we were all pissing ourselves laughing. The record seemed to go on for ages with the DJ looking totally bemused but not changing records to put them out of their agony.

Happy days, I think drink might have had something to do with it perhaps!

Excellent summary of yesterdays Live 8, Jack, couldnt agree more about your portrayal of Robbie Williams. Annie Lennox and REM superb. Was in Manchester on Thursday night to see Oasis at the City of Manchester Stadium and I doubt I will ever see a better concert in my lifetime (even if the Gallaghers are a pair of knob heads). it was absolutely superb and I am already looking forward to going back to the same stadium to see the lads play. Going to see Coldplay in Bolton on Tuesday night - its at the Reebok Stadium though - was kinda hoping it was gonna be at The Phoenix Club.......

Oasis eh Ian? Must admit to be being a bit "Mad for it" meself like.

Top band with some good tunes, and a local lad, young Archer from Hunwick, too.

Knobheads they are them Gallaghers but they are talented Knobheads
