Would you believe it. Billy attends his first match on my 13th Birthday, and i was probably there, having travelled down on the G&B from Kelloe which was organised by Ernie Cherret. Used to be about 2/-6d to travel there and back and there was no motorway travel as such then. Bus used to park on the sea front at Roker and we used to walk up to the ground.
Fookin hell, it's all coming back.

First game for me Billy was Stan Andersons Testimonial SAFC v England 11 and I think it was late 1963. I know it was cold, it was played under floodlights and me and our youngun sat in the main stand. Sunderland beat an England 11 4-3 I thin with Nicky Sharkey scoring a hat trick. The England side contained players like Jackie Milburn, Ron Springett, Bryan Douglas, Stan Matthews and other luminaries of the game.

Eeee lads, I've seen some happy days and some sad ones down at Roker. A life time of ups and downs.

More downs than ups though.

How ironic is the cover picture of that programme. "Baxter just clears the post" v Nottingham Forest.

Within a year Baxter would be playing for them and aon the slippery slope downhill.

Okay guys my first was when I was about 6 and my Dad took me to his belovered Boro to see Boro v SAFC. Can't remember what division or final score but when my Dad asked me what I thought abiut the match I apparently said good team Dad - Sunderland played well can we go and see them every match ... the rest is history!

Huyton and Jimmy are going to love this next revelation.

When I was about 10 years old I used to play with a lad called Geoffrey Higgins. Jack might know him (Higgy). Anyway his dad was an ardent Boro supporter and sometimes used to take us to see them play. This was before I ever went to Sunderland although I supported Sunderland. Geoff and I used to go in the Boys End at the Boro then jump over the wall and meet up with his dad. This was in the days of big John Hickton. Thankfully this early smoggy influence did not have any lasting effect and when I got a bit older I was able to go to Sunderland on the bus from Doggy and the rest's history.

An even more shameful revelation involving the Mags will be posted later. This will involve details of two separate occasions when I've seen the Mags play ...... and Sunderland weren't even playing !

Billy, your revelation about the Higgy incident does nor surprise me.

The way you jumped into that media chair on Thursday night only serves to reinforce my belief that you are a CLOSET SMOGGIE.

The Newcastle revelation may come as a big surprise to us all and I don't know if we are ready to hear it.
