Murray injured in restaurant incident

Sunderland chairman Bob Murray and his wife were injured by a beer glass in an incident in a Newcastle restaurant on Friday night.
Police are investigating the incident, which took place at around 11pm and left Mr Murray with a facial injury and Mrs Murray with a damaged eye.
The pair were having dinner with Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy and his wife.
"Sunderland AFC can confirm that there was an incident at a Newcastle restaurant last night," said a club statement.
"Mr and Mrs Murray and Mr and Mrs McCarthy were having a meal when the incident occurred at approximately 11pm.
"A beer glass was used in an attack on Mr Murray, who sustained an injury to his face. Mrs Murray also sustained an eye injury caused by flying glass.
"The police have advised Mr and Mrs Murray, Mr and Mrs McCarthy and the club not to comment further at this time."
It is understand McCarthy intervened in an effort to stop the attack.
Mr Murray, a multi-millionaire former accountant who made his fortune by selling kitchens and bathrooms, is the longest-serving chairman in the Black Cats history, having succeeded motor dealer Sir Tom Cowie in 1986.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that we are investigating a complaint from the chairman of Sunderland AFC that he was assaulted in a Newcastle restaurant last night.
"We received this complaint this evening."
Both the police and the club refused to make any further comment about the incident.

Whatever one thinks of Bob Murray and his stewardship of SAFC this incident is an absolute disgrace.

I do hope that this is not an incident perpetrated by a Sunderland fan, and I do hope that the offender is banged to rights.

We have enough problems with our image as it is without any of this rearing itself.

I notice it is extensively covered on the SMB
