My contribution to the David O'leary debate

O'Leary's celebrations have taken up a lot of air time on 5 Live this evening , most from bitter Blues fans.

I saw fit to email 5 Live and gained national (and perhaps international fame via digital) fame by bringing the show to a close with this email being read out.

O'Leary

Lets go one better. A manager celebrating before a match.

Malcolm Allison then manager of Crystal Palace, fedora on head, cigar in hand, strode to the Fulwell End at Roker Park during the Kick in before the 1975/76 FA cup quarter final and made the gesture 1-0. Of course we all took it in the spirit it was meant and gestured back with two fingers. ( 2-0)

The final score?

1-0 to Palace Alan Whittle.

Did we moan and groan. No we just got on with it.

I'm sure most of us older bloggers will remember that one.

I remember it well Huyton. To complete the ensemble wasn't he wearing some sort of big fur coat and wasn't the fedora purple or pale blue? I was convinced we were going to win that game but another disappointment (story of my life as a Sunderland supporter).

Although he was sometimes a clown as least 'Big Mal' had a bit of character about him - if he was managing today he'd probably be given a touchline ban

Didn't see the extent of O'Leary's celebrations. Was it OTT? If we get a result next week at SJP we might see Mick McCarthy doing an Irish jig as he can be quite passionate at times.
