Good, Bad or Indifferent?

Right lads I'm eager to know what's gone on this afternoon. How you saw the game, and how you see the season panning out?

I've spent the afternoon shopping with Mrs Hoofer for the little bits and pieces you take on holiday, or should I say I've spent my time standing outside of shops while the missus looks for clothes to take on holiday. You know how it is.

Anyway I saw the bus pass the house this afternoon as we sat and watched Everton v Man Utd on www.coolstreaming.org ( worth downloading and using the ESPN channel for live Prem footy.) 3 games on today, including the Prem Plus game at Smogsville and all for nowt.

We were 1-0 down when I got out of the car in Durham. Then went to Peterlee where we were 2-1 down and up against 10 men when I got back in the car and 3-1 down as I left the A19.

So where are the fault lines? Did Welsh really need to come off to be replaced with a forward, when it sounded as though he was the only player providing service to the forwards?

Are Breen and Caldwell as bad as ever? Sounded like it on the radio?

Bad start lads against one of the "ordinary prem sides" and looks likeMM will get the title of worst prem Manager in it's history after we leave Anfield next week. 11 defeats in a row.

We live in hope, but as Andy Gray ( commentator) said on SKY this morning." Mick has bought a lot but no quality. In this division you need quality or you will be punished."

We knew that already.

Now you lads have seen it first hand.

In response to this post and Walters below we were pretty awful. We gave Charlton far too much respect and the goals we conceded were poor - we gave them far too much space and time and you just can't do that in the Premiership. I'm sure we can improve on this performance as we looked disjointed and gave the ball away far too much. We certainly were lacking in quality, especially against 10 men and without having a knee-jerk reaction it's hard to see where the quality will come from. Charlton had a couple of players who stood out i.e. Murphy, and made us look very ordinary. On the +ve side we made some chances towards the end when we got the ball in their box but were unable to convert them.
Overall a very disappointing and substandard performance against an average Prem side with not even a lot of fighting spirit on show. We had a slow start last season so hopefully we'll get better as we adjust to the Premiership but not a lot of positives today I'm afraid. In fact it was worryingly reminiscent of our last season in the Prem. Breen and Cauldwell looked very exposed so I'm looking for Stubbs to come in and make a difference. Far too early to predict total doom and gloom. Anyway, thats the first game over and not expecting anything from Liverpool next week but Man City and Wigan after that so looking for a win and a draw at least from those games.

Jack you got it right--We are a Championship side playin in the Premiership forget about Breens heroics last season and Cauldwell their play does not work against hungry forwards in this league .

I think you've got to keep a positive slant on for the time being at least. Charlton are a workmanlike side who have some good players but no "stars". This game was always going to be tough, but if it serves no other purpose than to wake Sunderland up to the reality of the premier league then good.

They need to take lessons from this, and McCarthy is the man who needs to repond in the most positive manner. It was galringly obvious last season that Breen and Caldwell are wide open to being turned quickly and once they are.....

Sunderland are going to have to make it tough for the opposition to get behind them and everyone from midfield to defence need to play their part. There needs to be a real team ethic to make that happen.

No one believed this would be easy and it won't be, but we are going to have to make life hard for the opposition if we are to survive.

I feel a 4-5-1 coming on and yet that was Reids undoing in some games. MM can't afford to play a system like that at home, or he'll really understand about how to make enemies by influencing people.

Yopu lads all need medals as big as frying pans for puttong up with it.

Already I understand why I have a lack of enthusiasm.

It's early days but I'll give him 6 games before the knives start to be sharpened and the SOL stars wanting him out.

Well I watched the game again on MOTD and we were poor. The defensive frailties were there for all to see and we definitely need to tighten up in midfield and defence - we gave Charlton far too much time and space and they capitalised with ease. I think things will improve when Stubbs and McCartney get in the side but Julio looked poor at full back and Stephen Wright was equally unimpressive at right back although he was loads better than Nosworthy who looks like he'll be the new whipping boy. I'm very worried about Wrighty more than any other position - he looked out of his depth and needs to improve greatly or else we'll be in trouble in that area.
One positive thing to come out of the game is that we've got it over and can now hopefully move on and improve. The first game after promotion is always a big step and some of the lads looked over-awed and TBH they haven't played together much as a side. We could also have got an equaliser late on, before the last minute goal, if we'd been a bit sharper in the box following some good build up work by Welsh down the left but it was ominous how a long punt out of the box led to the last goal. Cauldwell just jogged along beside his man who had loads of time to set himself up and he popped it in to the goal. Poor positioning by Davis but he should never have been allowed to get the shot in. The lesson learnt should be that you can't give strikers time and space in the Premier or they'll score.
Anyway, that games over. After watching Liverpool last night we'll get nothing out of that game but need to get going against Man City and Wigan. The Smogs looked very ordinary last night and we'll see how the Mags do against Arsenal today. What odds a NE treble for relegation?

Haway the lads and FTM.
