DURHAM BIG MEETING 2005

OK Bloggers.

All you lads with pit village background here are 30 photo's in an album from Saturday 9th July 2005 from the 121st Durham Miners Gala.

Click on the title bar to take you there.

One of the most colourful spectacles on the North East calendar, this years gala was held in baking hot sunshine that saw the largest crowd in years gather in Durham to witness and enjoy the sound of brass and bagpipes.

Generation of former miners and their families filled the streets of Durham as 60 banners marched in to the sound of brass from 9:00 am and march out again from 2:30 pm onwards.

Dennis Skinner MP, the Beast of Bolsover gave a rousing speech to the masses gathered in front of the podium and he took the piss out of the Lib Dems, The Tories and to a lesser extent New Labour.

The pubs were full and the streets filled with everyone enjoying a drink in the sunshine. Never saw any trouble. The police presence was very low key and it was an enjoyable day.

Enjoy the photos .

Brilliant pics Huyton. Wingate banner is a classic, as is the New Herrington one. "Men of the People" - those were the days! I wonder how many of today's 'politically correct' leaders will be remembered in the same way as the Labour giants of yesteryear?
A glimpse of R&W stripes to be seen in the Fishburn picture!
Haven't been to the Big Meeting for years, must go next year and take the boys and show them some of our heritage and tradition, before the days of Sky tv and Playstation.

It was interesting to note the amount of Red and White shirts on display on Saturday.

The shirt of the other variety was little seen other than on kids, whilst it tended to be the grown men sporting Red and White.

SAFC a real pitmans club
