Burnley v SAFC

Picked up at 3.00pm for the journey to Turf Moor not a bad turnout on the bus 28 true Mackems on the way to what we hoped was three points and top slot in the Championship. Stop off (apart from pee stops and a stop to get rid of the booze that Clive found on the bus all thrown away and the grass got tipsy) was in a place that I can't pronounce never mind spell. The pub was small, service poor and the beer was as bad as the service. I stuck with Cider finished off with a whisky before leaving at 7.00pm to go to the match.
Good attendance from the loyal supporters but not as many as if it had been played on a Saturday for as we looked for our seats the stewards were saying sit anywhere. First half we played well knocking the ball about well but we did not create enough chances to make our possession count. However we went in at half time one goal up and what looked like a definite penalty with one of the Burnley players clearing off the line with his hand. Second half was a bit different with the Lads sitting back again - good save by Myhre to keep us on top and then Whitley nearly scored - the only thing he did right all game. Excellent performance by Bridges until his substitution with the Coxa Lad Marcus scoring the second to give us what we had hoped for three points and top of the league - for the moment.
I am still not getting carried away but it's nice first of all to catch up on Ipswich and Wigan then to go three points clear with what should be easy games ahead - Crewe away, Plymouth Home and Coventry home. These may keep us on top for when we get to April for as Tom H puts it its best to be ahead and let the other sides have the pressure to catch us up when we play them. So here's hoping for a good March........ a march that will take us into April still ahead of the rest.

A fair summary of the day from Jimmy. Things were looking good as we set off from Coxhoe in good spritis (some of them in Jimmy's bottle of pop - sshh, don't tell Clive) but a bit disappointed with the pub. A long journey to the far side of Burnley meant we didn't get there till 6 pm and had to leave at 7 pm plus it wasn't very good anyway (beer or venue) so one to cross off the list for the future.
Anyway, enjoyed the game and the result and it was great to go top of the league. As Thomas Hegarty was saying, if you can go top and pull out a few points lead on the others they will have a devil of a job trying to catch you (witness ourselves chasing WBA last season).
A long way still to go but things looking promising and a good result vs Crewe next weekend followed by the same agaisnt Plymouth on the Tuesday will do us a poer of good.
Oops, hope I haven't jinxed us! Still a few twists and turns to come and it wouldn't be Sundrrland if it wasn't nail-biting till then end.

Reading Jim's comments about Crewe and easy game, gave me a strange feeling of Deja Vu. I seem to recall November 22nd, 2003. Watching and listening to a nailbiting rugby world cup final as we travelled to Crewe, me giving the commentary and Jim providing the TV pictures. £1 a pint John Smiths and Billy thinking the barmaid had short changed herself

3easy points we thought and a 3-0 defeat. Never an easy game at Crewe though the beer is cheap. This season will go right down to the wire and it would'nt suprise me one little bit to see it go to the final day. There are difficult away games to come at Ipswich, Wigan and West Ham. I understand Toms view, but anybody can beat anybody in this division and I can't see anyone pulling clear. It'll be between the 3 that are up there now.

Can't disagree Huyton, I remember that day well. Thought we were going to win and came away with nowt and our tails between our legs. Maybe in our favour this time though is that Crewe are having a torrid time this season without Dean Ashton. There are some poor teams in the division and if we're to get automatic promotion we need to beat them - if we can't get good results against the likes of Crewe and Plymouth we don't deserve to go up. Agree with Jack that it's likely to go to the wire; somehow all the teams will get the jitters at some stage of the run in, the two that cope with it best will be the ones that get promotion.
We can discuss further on Wednesday and see what Mr Parnaby has to say.

Just goes to show Jim that beer kills the brain cells whilst nicotine keeps the old synapse's sparking and the chemicals flowing.

You are still a funny beggar Jim. I bet you've even got the dog in stitches!!

As it happens Jim's dog might be in stitches! On the way to the game he was telling me that the dogs had been fighting and the collie had a big rip in it's side. Before he left for Burnley Jim was putting some 'wound powder' on it. Never mentioned if he'd had to give it the kiss of life or anything.

Yes Billy, Jim has certainly had that dog well and truly stitched up. Jim has been stitched up too........ by the vet!!!

I told him if he'd seen me I'd have done it for 3 quid and a free seat on the bus.
