Message from Mick

Dear Coxhoe Branch,

Brentford were better than us, they deserved to win. They were two excellent finishes but it was awful, awful defending.
It would be churlish to criticise our lads when I think they [Brentford] did well.
The defending for both goals, despite two great finishes, was schoolboy stuff - especially the second one.
I can't sing DJ Campbell's praises enough but it was bad defending. It's disgraceful defending. If I had been playing they wouldn't have gone in - and I'm 47!
It's not a confidence thing. We played well last week and were really confident; they've done a job on us and been better than us. My only argument is with my team.
We have missed him [Kyle] but he's not fully back at it yet; he's done alright - as well as the other strikers and he's been out for 18 months, so that perhaps tells you something about it.
There are no positives, we were poor. It would be a long week if we had to wait until [next] Saturday. I'm glad we've got the Boro game.
We're not guaranteed because of our Premier League status to come down here and win. I can only concede that they were better than us on the day.
They fought hard for it and caused us problems, certainly the front two did. But I didn't particularly like the way we played against them. I've let the players know what I think.
We had a great chance to score at 0-0. I didn't expect to lose it the way we did. I'll keep battling away like I always have.

All the best,

Mick

McCarthy must go ..... NOW!

I've been following the game on Sky this afternoon and we were outplayed, outsmarted and generally outclassed by Brentford. A few things stick out

Why did he play Kyle?
A miss from 6 yards by Stead - will he EVER score
Our goal has a mis-hit scuffed cross
McCarthy's 'like for like' substitution - Kyle and Stead off, Le Tallec and Gray on
Numerous scoring chances for Brentford

Nothing else to play for now and the manager obviously doesn't have a clue. The only consolation is I didn't go to the game.

McCarthy must go ..... NOW!

Memories - Jan. 27th 2001 FA Cup 4th Round

Sunderland 1 Ipswich 0
By Damian Spellman, PA Sport

Danny Dichio assumed Niall Quinn's mantle to dump Ipswich out of the FA Cup and fire Sunderland into the fifth round.
Peter Reid opted to leave the big Irishman on the bench with champions Manchester United due at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night, but his replacement fulfilled his job to the letter as he sent a 22nd-minute diving header past Richard Wright to ensure victory in a close contest.
Sunderland had the better of the possession, with Don Hutchison - who played up front alongside Dichio after Kevin Phillips failed to reappear after the break - Alex Rae and Gavin McCann, outstanding in midfield despite a fine display by Town's Jim Magilton.
But the visitors were always dangerous on the break, Marcus Stewart forcing a fine early save from Thomas Sorensen and Alun Armstrong wasting a good opportunity.
Reid made two changes to the side held 0-0 by Bradford at the Stadium of Light last Sunday, Stanislav Varga replacing calf injury victim Emerson Thome and Dichio getting the nod over Quinn.
Ipswich, who lost 4-1 at Sunderland on New Year's Day, made three changes to the 11 which went down by the same score at Chelsea last weekend.
Defender Mark Venus returned from a thigh injury; Titus Bramble was recalled following a suspension, and Jermaine Wright won back his place as Jamie Clapham, James Scowcroft and Gary Croft made way.
The visitors signalled their intention not to allow a repeat of their last visit to Wearside as they started with five men at the back and were ready to hit Sunderland on the break.
It was a ploy which worked reasonably well in the opening stages. Ipswich enjoyed the better of the early chances, Stewart drawing an important 16th-minute save from Sorensen and Armstrong failing to make the goalkeeper work after being put in by Magilton three minutes later.
The visitors were made to pay for not taking their chances with 22 minutes gone when Varga played Hutchison into space on the right, and he crossed early for Dichio to dive and head past the stranded Wright.
Armstrong was guilty of wasting another good opening seven minutes later when he robbed Varga wide on the right but misplaced his pass to the fast arriving Matt Holland. He then sent a difficult overhead kick high over after Holland had played Venus' deep free-kick back across goal.
But Sunderland began to dominate as the half wore on and without creating any clear-cut chances started to impose themselves in a tight contest.
The home fans uttered an audible groan when their team emerged after the break without Phillips, who was replaced by Kilbane - but as Hutchison pushed up to partner Dichio the disappointment was eased somewhat.
Hutchison was at the heart of all his side's best work as he prospered from the service given to him by Rae and McCann, firing in a dipping volley which Wright did well to claim and then playing in Dichio who toe-poked a 56th-minute shot past the goalkeeper but was denied a second goal by the woodwork.
The same combination was responsible for another close thing nine minutes later as Dichio again shot just wide.
But as the game entered its final stages Ipswich - who had sent Richard Naylor and Jamie Clapham on in place of Venus and Armstrong at the break - increased their tempo in the search for an equaliser.
Sunderland almost cemented victory 10 minutes from time when Hutchison sent in a glancing header from Kilbane's right-wing corner but saw his effort land on the roof of the net.
Ipswich battled all the way to the end, but Fabian Wilnis wasted a good chance to put substitute James Scowcroft in on goal at the death as his pass ran out for a goal-kick.
Hutchison could have put the result beyond any doubt in injury time but could not beat Wright from a tight angle after a powerful surge down the right.

Anonymity

Posted in March 2005 and still holds good to day. C'mon show yersel, get a board name.

The Cloak of Anonymity
Lacking individual characteristics, He who shall not be known.Tis a strange thing to be anonymous. Keeps us all guessing I suppose. Intrigued that there are those among us us wish to keep a mysterious viel over them, lest we guess who they may be. You can do all manner of things with a cloak over your head, colloquially speaking of course, such is the power of anonymity. You can pass compliments, trade insults, abuse and torment, all in the knowledge that you won't be found out. Or so they think!Sooner or later anonymity trips you up. It will provide you with a clue,or a slip of the tongue at the most unexpected tie will drop them in it. Bit like being a burglar or a robber who has committed the crime but hopes he won't be found out.So to get to the point. If you feel the need to post on the blog, then get a display name, it's easy enough to do. Lets not get into the game of casting aspersions at good, honest Sunderland supporting individuals, who for one reason or another choose not to go at the moment. We are all in this together, are emotinally involved, because of our love for SAFC, whether it was the last game or only game an individual attended is irrelevant. What has gone before is as important as what is happening now and what is to come in the future. So FTM and Ha'Way the Lads.

Alan Stubbs

Although getting on a bit, I thought he would have been a good signing for SAFC (remember what Steve Bould did). Injuries meant he was missing a few times but he still never got the nod over Caldwell and Breen in recent weeks. So what happens today Everton rush him through a medical before todays 5 o'clock deadline to ensure he is available for the week-end game with Arsenal. Best of luck Alan you might as well go to a team that may play you on a regular basis. SAFC must think that Breen and Caldwell are better than you, possibly younger I think but not better.

An Argentinian view on Sunderland - Chelsea.

From my humble point of view, i'd like to analyse the match from two angles; the first and the 2nd half: I saw "eleven lions" in the first half, pushing and running for each ball, nothing to do with the spunkless side we're used to see weekend after weekend.. I liked Sunderland's attitude from the kick-off , an attitude worthy of a home side in need of the three points. Unfortunately, all was completely different during the 2nd half with Chelsea literally pushing Sunderland against their own field.. CRESPO I HATE YOU!!

The outcome, another defeat but at least today we've witnessed a healthier attitude, don't you think so guys?? Too late perhaps...

6,500 Mag Fans at Craven Cottage...?

I picked this posting up from RTG this morning. Click on title for link

"According to both Match of the Day and football first. Surely that can't be right, why would Fulham give them the entire end when they havent done for other large clubs this season?Maybe they've been elaborating with the truth again."

"Looked more like 65,000 to me, with the same waiting for return tickets..."

"The figure is exaggerated because Fulham use the controversial "shit tache, mullet and beer belly" formula for estimating crowds. The number of bad taches, mullets and beer bellies are measured then multiplied by a national average - hence the gross over estimate in the numbers of our stylish friends from up the road. See pic for good example of your average Mag supporter. When calculating the season ticket waiting list they use the equally controversial "Mag IQ factor", on top of the "shit tache and beer belly" formula. The "Mag IQ factor" is where the average national IQ is divided by the average Mag supporter IQ. The resultant number is >> 1 and is used to boost the waiting list numbers and hence borrow more money from the banks to fund the board of director's dividend payments."

Favourite drink in Smog land - let's hope it's not ours tomorrow!

Although unlikely let's see if we can get something out of the game tomorrow. Even if we can't win let's come away knowing that we've 'given it a go' and with pride.

SUNDERLAND REPORTS 2000-2001

Welcome to the Premiership, Sven-Goran Eriksson.

A warm reception from the Upton Park crowd, Abba hits played at half-time and even a fellow Swede, Stefan Schwarz, on the winning side.

But although Eriksson was able to catch sight of the precocious talent of Joe Cole, who flitted into life in bursts, it was more of an introduction to the singular world of English football than a foretaste of his first squad.
For none of the other English players on display really set the world alight and even Cole faded later on, while Sunderland found the target twice but there was the rare sight of Kevin Phillips not being among the scorers.
Those were instead a Slovakian international - defender Stanislav Varga with a 23rd-minute header - and a Scot - midfielder Don Hutchison with a free-kick that resembled Germany's winner against England at Wembley.
Eriksson will otherwise have seen tackles flying in from all angles, more perspiration than inspiration, and an inconsistent refereeing display.
None of this, however, should detract from a fine performance by a Sunderland side who fully deserve their place among the elite places in the top-flight and now stand second in the table.
Few other teams will manage to keep Paolo di Canio and Frederic Kanoute so quiet, as it was only Cole who managed to inspire the Hammers into life - and even then, only sporadically.
The teenager admitted he was a bag of nerves on his first training session with the senior squad under Kevin Keegan and "looked like a big donkey" but was full of purposeful invention and workrate at Upton Park.
With fellow emerging midfielder Michael Carrick absent through injury, team-mates Trevor Sinclair and Frank Lampard had their moments but all too few of them.
Indeed, it was Sunderland's 22-year-old Gavin McCann who caught the eye in midfield, while Phillips had at most one half-chance all afternoon but impressed with his hold-up play and harrying of the defence.
And Eriksson will now know not only Michael Gray's name but also that he produced a consistent display and can cross a ball with some accuracy.
Otherwise, the research continues with Leicester at Ipswich tomorrow and Manchester United on the agenda next weekend.
Given that the heart of England's 1966 World Cup triumph beat so strongly at West Ham in Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, Upton Park was at least a fitting venue to start an immersion into the Premiership.
Eriksson was introduced to the crowd before the game and was given a warm reception, rising to his feet with what almost appeared to be shyness to acknowledge the applause from all sides of the ground.
Then again, coming to watch West Ham in his first game as England coach, with right-hand man Tord Grip, was always likely to go down rather well with the Upton Park faithful.
Eriksson may not have reached his seat in time to see Sinclair receive his December goal of the month award, but he did see the wing-back's determination to make an early mark on the game with a deflected shot.
A more important influence came, however, from Nigel Winterburn, who is - along with Stuart Pearce - one of West Ham's two 37-year-old former England internationals, as he cleared Don Hutchison's header off the line.
Neither side were imposing themselves on the game, with cameo displays by various players rather than leading roles at this stage.
McCann intercepted just as Lampard took aim and Cole produced a superb covering tackle as Darren Williams threatened to break free onto Phillips' through-ball on the break.
But after Sorensen had saved from Kanoute after a mistake by Varga, it was the Slovakian defender who rose above even team-mate Niall Quinn to head home McCann's free-kick.
Back came West Ham, but it was hardly convincing.
Sinclair burst through the centre but shot wide, while Cole, whose talent was bubbling to the surface every now and then, embarked on a purposefully mazy run but finished just as badly.
West Ham substitute keeper Craig Forrest replaced Shaka Hislop at the interval and was soon required to block a prodded shot by Quinn at the far post as the centre-forward was allowed to meet Gray's deep cross.
Sunderland were simply not allowing the Hammers to play their way back into contention as their defensive line held firm and they matched them for workrate in midfield.
They could not legislate for a superb through-ball by Cole as he set di Canio through, only for the Italian to strike a firm shot against the foot of the post.
And after a free-kick was awarded for a foul on McCann by Lampard, West Ham were caught unawares as Hutchison scored from 25 yards out.
In many ways, it was reminiscent of the goal that Dietmar Hamann scored for Germany against England at Wembley as West Ham were still arranging their wall and keeper Forrest appeared unsighted as Hutchison shot.
West Ham offered little in the way of a stirring response, apart from Pearce's free-kick being tipped round the post by Sorensen, and even Cole's influence started to fade.
So much for Eriksson's vision of the future of English football. At least Sunderland are managed by an Englishman. Step forward and take a well-deserved bow, Peter Reid.
Teams:
West Ham: Hislop (Forrest 45), Stuart Pearce, Winterburn, Song, Tihinen (Camara 74), Lomas, Cole, Sinclair, Lampard, Di Canio, Kanoute.
Subs Not Used: Moncur, Potts, Bassila.
Booked: Lomas, Winterburn, Stuart Pearce, Song.
Sunderland: Sorensen, Williams, Gray, Thome, Varga, Hutchison, Schwarz, Rae, McCann, Quinn (Kilbane 81), Phillips.

Blackburn v SAFC (re-arranged fixture)

Sunderland AFC’s postponed fixture against Blackburn Rovers has been rearranged for Wednesday 15th February 2006, kick off 8pm.

The original fixture was set to take place on Dec 28th 2005 but was called off due to the Ewood Park pitch being frozen.

Rovers officials offered their sincere apologies to Sunderland AFC and the Club’s travelling supporters following the late cancellation, the cause of which has since been confirmed as a leaking pipe in the Ewood Park undersoil heating system, which allowed the pitch to freeze during a particularly cold spell.

After discussions between officials from both Clubs, the Lancashire side will be providing free transport via coach from the Stadium of Light to Blackburn for Sunderland supporters for new date.

SAFC Chief Executive Peter Walker said: “This is a great gesture from Blackburn Rovers to our supporters and they do genuinely hope that as many fans as possible take advantage of the offer.”

Any supporter in possession of a valid match ticket can take advantage of the offer. Supporters must obtain a coach ticket in advance, no later than 5:30pm, Wednesday 8th February and are asked to call 0845 671 1973 or call into the Stadium of Light ticket office to do so.

Supporters are asked to arrive at the Stadium of Light for 1:30pm boarding. Only those in possession of a valid pass will be permitted to board the coaches and fans are reminded that alcohol is not permitted on any buses.

Buses will depart Ewood Park to return to the Stadium of Light as soon as possible after the final whistle.

Supporters unable to attend the rearranged fixture can obtain a full refund on the cost of their original ticket from the SAFC ticket office. Refunds must be applied for before February 15th.

SAFC v Chelsea

Just a reminder that the next match that we are expected to win is played on Sunday, kick-off 4.05pm. The coach will leave Kelloe at 1.50pm / Coxhoe 1.55pm and Doggie at 2.00pm.

Also please note that due to declining numbers on the coach we have lost £150 + over the last three matches and need the support of all the branch members that are still attending the matches. Okay if you have voted with your feet due to the current performance on and off the field and do not go to the matches, but this note is directed at the members who still are going to the matches but now in cars because it's cheaper / our lass is taking me cos she wants to go shopping / I need to be in Sunderland early or I need to be back quick to get out on the night.

Since we have parked at Dundass Street we have had no more problems with late departure and we have returned to Coxhoe at 6.00pm or before.

I could go by car, I get my petrol paid for so it would cost me nowt to go to the matches by car but I support the branch because its there for the local community. One day you may need the branch to get to the matches and the branch might not be there due to you using your cars now and again.

As I have said many a time it's not my branch it's your branch please support us through thick and thin - leave the car at home and get the coach.

A good day for a change!

Two cup ties, two wins, not a bad day!

This morning we went through to Smoggieland to see Ferryhill U12's trounce Whinney Banks 10-1 in the TJFA cup. Whinney Banks scored first, against the run of play, but our lads turned on the style and were 4-1 up at half time and won comfortably in the end with Vinnie scoring 6. Could have been a lot more as their goalie played a blinder and we missed a lot of chances but that's us through to the next round.

This afternoon it was Sunderland vs Northwich and for the first time in a long while I enjoyed the game. The early goal settled us down and after that we were always in control and had a comfortable win. Just a shame Stead couldn't get a goal. No Andy Gray in the squad so perhaps the rumours are right that he's on his way out.

Next week it's Chelsea - bring 'em on!

Sign of the times

It was once a magical day - the day of the 3rd round of the FA Cup but now it's the week-end of the 3rd round. Looking at the fixtures we are playing Sunday cos the Scum are playing at home as well today and the Northunbrian Police stated they could not police the two games - we lost the toss and were made to play on Sunday. Look at the fixtures today and what stands out are the two Sheffield sides playing at home today in the 3rd round ... now if the South Yorkshire police can manage that and still pick up all those speeding motorists then surely the police up here could have done the same.
Anyway another sign of the times is the lack of interest from the branch only 4 adults, 4 kids going, so pick up at the Red Lion by the Sedgefield Branch - thanks Clive we owe you one. If we win perhaps we may change our normal pick up to the Red Lion - going back to our old roots may change our luck. Did I say "if we win" bloody hell another sign of the times.

Xmas fixtures etc

We’ll I’ve not done much posting over the Xmas hols so I thought I’d do a review of the Xmas games. This will consist of a very short match report and a brief report on the awayday’s

Bolton
Poor game but at least we managed a point.

Blackburn
Got to the Greyhound at 12:15 to find it CLOSED! Eventually opened at 12:40 and managed a pint before boarding the bus and off to Clitheroe. On the journey down we were entertained by Butch trying to mend the toilet door; he put a ‘full shift’ in and eventually got it mended - could this be perhaps a portent of things to come and Butch making a re-appearance in the jobs market in 2006? On the radio it said that the Bolton vs Smogs game had been cancelled but no mention of our game. When we got to Clitheroe it was very cold and icy but we made it safely to the pub where we settled in for a few drinks. I got in a round with my two marra’s from Kella and we had some good crack and a few pints (although Steph was grumbling about me drinking £2.40 lager and him and Thomas being on the £2 John Smiths!). All was going well till 6 o’clock when rumours began circulating round the pub that there was a pitch inspection; at 6:30 the police came into the pub and announced that the game had been called off! We boarded the bus and trooped off back to the NE, getting home at 9 o’clock. At least we didn’t get beat!

Everton
We should have had the game won comfortably but, once again, let it slip away and came away with nothing. I know we’re not a good team but I can think back to a number of games where we’ve dropped points against poor teams which might have kept us in closer contention (WBA, Birmingham, WHU, Everton etc)

Fulham
I picked up Jimmy at just after 7 o’clock and we had a good run through to Darlington Station. The roads were very quiet due it being a Bank Holiday. Got to the station in good time and had a coffee whilst waiting for our train at 08:03. At approx 07:50 I asked Jimmy to have a look at the tickets and see which carriage we were in. To cut a long story short I thought he had the tickets and he thought I had them! Jimmy had them when he got into the car but he’d handed them to me as he’d got in; my fault! I made a dash back to the car park and retrieved the tickets and got back with a few minutes to spare. The train pulled in but no coach G where our reserved seats were located. However there were no reservations on any of the seats and the train was almost empty so we were able to get sat at a table and enjoyed a quiet journey to Kings X, arriving on time at 10:52. When we got there we made our way to Putney Bridge where we met up with the Miller possee in the Golden Lion pub and were soon joined by Alan. Had a bit crack and a few drinks then off to the game, Alan and I collecting some fish and chips on the way. They cost £5:15 (!) but the fish was massive and accompanied by a mountain of chips so well worth it, especially as we were ‘starving’.
Got to the ground and took up our seats. Although it’s an old ground the view was excellent and the facilities quite good. Sunderland played OK but never really looked like they were going to win and inevitably surrendered all the points to an average Fulham side. Met up with Clive at half time and as we were talking to him the Police pulled to one side these young lads who were standing beside us and asked them to turn out their pockets. The Police must have been watching them and they were pulling out half bottles of spirits from every pocket so that soon it was like a brewery! Needless to say they got chucked out and the drink confiscated.
The second half came and went and our one goal advantage was overturned to a 2-1 defeat but nothing different to what we expected and we left to make our way home, Miller having left a few minutes before the end to go for a pint. When we got to the pub Jimmy and I decided to get nearer to Kings Cross so phoned Miller to tell him that’s what were doing. Said goodbye to Alan and got back to Kings Cross at 5:55, just in time to find the 6 o’clock train ready to go! Although our tickets were restricted and for the 7 o’clock train we decided to ‘give it a go’ and got on the 6 o’clock train. When the conductor came for our tickets Jimmy ‘played a blinder’ and convinced him to let us stay on the train and not charge us the full fare of £100 which was due. A top performance by Jimmy, aided and abetted by frequent references to his broken arm. Jimmy phoned Miller to tell him that we’d got on the earlier train to find that they’d missed the 7 o’clock train (detained in the pub?) and would be catching the 8 o’clock one. How did it go Ian? Were you able to blag your way home without paying any extra? We got home at 9 o’clock having enjoyed the good day out but, once again, not because of the football.

Well that's the Xmas fixtures over, now we can look forward to our next two games - Northwich Victoria on Sunday at home in the FAC and Chelsea at home in the Premiership the week after! Not much to look forward to, for different reasons! After that we'll all somehow have to get through to the end of the season with the certainty of relegation to come.
